I agree completely. Every time this discussion comes up, I say the same thing. A writer writes. If a person doesn't write, how can they call themselves a writer? If you want to do the one thing all published authors have in common, just sit your bum in your chair and tell your story!

If I've got a good draft/story going, I'm good for about an hour but much more than that wipes me out. I remember studying brain research in an ed psych class about how your brain uses so much energy that it literally saps the energy from your body and why most people can't go physically longer without a break. Very interesting research...

It's hard for me to stay focused more than 45-60 minutes without my mind starting to wander. I will usually take a 10-15 minute break and then start again. Anyone else have the same issues?

Thanks, Kerry. I appreciate it. And this week's special is actually a buy-one-get-one Snuggie deal. Pink or leopard print? :-)

When I asked Eddie if he would sign an autograph for my wife, he asked about her so he could personalize it and wrote, "To Sheila in the south end zone. Keep cheering us on to victory. We appreciate your help. #23 Eddie George." Needless to say, I was the best husband ever when I gave this to my wife. He didn't have to do that, but he's just that kind of a guy. Again, all class.

Thanks, Eric. NaNoWriMo teaches a lot of lessons, the least of which is how to write a book! Good for you that you figured out how to write in chunks--it's a skill more of us need to hone to be even more successful in our writing.

Any advice you'd give writers on how to move toward writing in those short bursts?

Thanks for your comment :)

I love what you're saying about setting reasonable goals and not being too hard on yourself when something steals away your writing time. One of the most valuable skills I learned during NaNoWriMo was how to write in short, focused bursts. Of course, now some of my best writing is done on the bus or during a 15 minute break at work...
