I can’t believe I’m at camp again. A whole year has passed and I still get excited about working with these amazing kids.
Since we’re in the middle of the year, it’s a good time to reflect, rejuvenate and re-goal your writing ambitions for the rest of 2008. To that end, here’s a bunch of posts on goal setting for writers from my old blog at Fountain Pen, Inc. Enjoy!

Goals with the Girls
Just back from a nice gab session at Panera’s with the Serious Writer girls. Every three weeks, we all meet and congratulate, commiserate and cogitate on our writing and writing process.
It never, ever, ever (did I say “ever?”) fails that I come home ready and raring to write from these coffeeshop gatherings. Whether it’s a renewed focus on my fiction or a new attitude toward my articles, the SW girls always get me moving (and it’s not just the threat of owing $5 in three weeks for lack of meeting the goal.)
Here are my next goals. This will be a busy three-week period, because the 25th-August 2nd I’ll be away on vacation (working at summer camp–better than any vacation anywhere), and there’s no time to mess up.
1) Finish chapter one in the new fiction work (untitled as of yet)
2) Submit romance genre article on July 24th (not due til Aug. 3 but I don’t think my brain will be back in writing mode after camp)
3) Submit article editor requested today (yay!) for diabetes magazine (due the 17th, would like to turn it in by the 15th)
I think that’s good enough. Not to mention I’m still taking the plotting-your-novel-using-the-Tarot online workshop (SOOOoooo much fun!), so I have to keep up with that as well. Suddenly, my summer went from slow to slow down in just a day. I like it that way
What about you? What about your writing goals for the next three weeks? And how will you reward yourself? I’d love to hear!

The Art of Creating a Writer’s Mission Statement
Here’s a short little article I just published in Cheryl Wright’s Writer2Writer ezine in November on creating a writer’s mission statement.
I’m in the process of getting links together on goal setting, motivation and all that good stuff you need before you venture into writing (or can use a refresher on) to post here daily and thought the mission statement idea was a fab place to start. No use in writing goals if you don’t know why you’re writing…right?
Enjoy….more later, when I finish the 1500 words for the day (currently on 0…lol)
Need Motivation and Focus? The Art of Creating A Writer’s Mission Statement
Goals
I belong to a stellar group of amazing lady writers who serve a variety of purposes. One of the most important is to keep cracking the whip (which ironically sounds like a $5 bill when I fail to meet my goals…) while goading me toward my own (self-set) three-week goals.
The Serious Writers has been a crucial element to improving my writing and keeping me going. We (5/6 of us, depending on month) meet at local coffeehouses every three weeks and vent, commiserate, share successes, drink coffee, eat chocolate, share bookcovers and reviews and do what all good writers do…set goals. If you don’t make your goals by the next meeting, you’re forced to cough up five bucks for the kitty. So far we’ve had some darn good lunches courtesy of the kitty. And since I had to pay yesterday, my goals this three weeks are much more reasonable:
–10 pages completed in the rough draft of my novella-in-progress
–a typed but possibly still rough draft version of the article on first lines (see earlier post on that bit of genius)
–to keep my sanity as I organize and send out the copies of manuscripts to be judged for my local RWA chapter (Central Ohio Fiction Writers) (what WAS I thinking when I agreed to be contest coordinator?)
Since Thursday (goal-day) I haven’t even thought about the goals. Maybe tonight.
It's pretty simple, really. I'm a writer who loves writing about writing, and sharing all the tricks of the trade with other writers. And when I'm not writing, I'm thinking about writing. I have a hunch you know what I mean :)
